So what is IP Surveillance?

Today, IP Surveillance is increasingly being used as an effective security solution that offers advanced monitoring and control. Historically, monitoring and surveillance applications have been served by analogue Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV) technology. However, with the rise of the digital age exposing the flaws of the analogue predecessor together with the move towards an increasingly online society, a whole raft of benefits over previous CCTV systems are being realised.

IP Surveillance is comprised of CCTV cameras that utilise the Internet Protocol (IP) to transmit image data and control signals over an Ethernet or Wireless Network. This is typically done by deploying IP cameras alongside a network video recorder (NVR) which then forms a complete record and playback system.

Why choose IP Surveillance (digital) over CCTV (analogue)?

IP Surveillance provides all of the superior functionality of an effective analogue CCTV offering, whilst giving you additional benefits such as increased accessibility, real-time alerts, superior cost savings, virtually unlimited storage and secure image distribution.

   CCTV (Analogue)
IP Surveillance (Digital)
Cost
Tendency to use coaxial cables which are expensive to deploy

Large cable runs involved

Cameras can be expensive

Uses existing Ethernet cabling

Less cabling required

IP cameras are more affordable

Resolution
CCTV cameras have improved image quality but lack support for megapixel image resolutions Support for a variety of image resolutions including both standard analogue CCTV and megapixel resolutions
Scalability and Flexibility

Can be complex to deploy as the cable runs that accompany CCTV cameras can be thousands of feet long

Expanding requires adding camera capacity sometimes in units of 16 and additional cabling

Easy convergence onto a new or existing IP cabling infrastructure

Easy and flexible to deploy - PoE allows the camera to be placed just about anywhere

Very scalable - can be configured to meet your precise requirements
Functionality
Many of the analogue cameras lack some of the more advanced features such as digital zoom

Allows the integration of video surveillance with other systems and functions such as access control, alarm systems, building management, traffic management etc.

Offers automated, real-time alerting via email, text or file transfer in response to video motion detection

Allows for secure, remote access from any device on the network – or outside the network via VPN or https

Allows for secure, virtually unlimited data storage

How easy is IP surveillance to implement?

Whether you are starting from scratch, extending an existing IP network or upgrading from a CCTV solution, D-Link’s IP Surveillance solutions can help you achieve maximum value with minimum cost. And because the majority of organisations already have a capable network infrastructure in place, implementing IP surveillance is a simple and seamless process that requires minimum investment.

What’s more, today’s network cameras are inexpensive and very easy to deploy, especially as the latest models have PoE (Power over Ethernet) functionality - allowing for much more flexible and energy efficient solutions.

What if I want to extend my existing IP Surveillance network?

Our IP Surveillance portfolio provides the flexibility and scalability that businesses today really need. So if you already have an IP solution in place, D-Link’s IP Surveillance products can easily plug into and optimise your existing network.

How do I migrate from CCTV to IP?

Because of the compatibility of our IP Surveillance product range, D-Link’s digital solutions can be simply integrated into your current CCTV systems, meaning that an upgrade to D-Link’s IP Surveillance solutions needn’t mean a complete and costly overhaul of your existing system.

So, whatever your business, and whatever your stage of development, choosing an IP Surveillance solution from D-Link gives you an effective way to monitor your business while not costing a fortune.
